The PHATHOM trial is researching whether psilocybin, combined with high-intensity occupational therapy, can improve recovery after stroke. Researchers believe psilocybin may help reopen the brain’s “critical period” for learning, allowing the brain to better respond to rehabilitation and potentially improve movement and function.
The study has two parts. First, participants receive psilocybin during a 24-hour hospital stay, where they are closely monitored to ensure safety. Safety is the primary goal of the study. Second, participants complete a 3–4-week outpatient occupational therapy program, with sessions 3–5 days per week using a high-intensity, video game–based rehabilitation program in an enriched therapeutic environment.
